Social

Social and Charitable Ministries

Inspired by the Gospel and the Franciscan commitment to the poor, the friars of the Province are engaged in a wide range of social and charitable ministries responding to the concrete needs of the economically disadvantaged and marginalized.

Healthcare and Medical Assistance

In Mumbai, the Province provides medical assistance to people who cannot afford adequate healthcare, bringing care, dignity, and hope to those who are often overlooked because of their economic circumstances.

Food Assistance

Through St. Anthony's Bread, food is distributed to the poor every Tuesday — a simple but meaningful expression of the Franciscan spirit of sharing and solidarity.

Hostels and Assistance for Poor Children

In Basen, Malom Noatoli, and Nanesera, the friars run hostels for children from poor and marginalized families who have the desire and ability to study but lack the facilities, resources, or environment to do so in their own villages. These hostels provide accommodation, food, education, and a supportive environment for children to grow. The Province also extends educational assistance — for basic as well as, where possible, professional and higher studies — helping young people from disadvantaged families become self-reliant.

Tuition and Educational Support

Recognizing the educational challenges faced by children in rural areas, the friars organize tuition and supplementary classes in villages to help children strengthen their academic foundations, particularly where access to private tuition is limited. The Province also runs summer camps and other programmes that build skills in areas such as English, music, and sports, while fostering teamwork, discipline, creativity, confidence, and healthy social interaction.

Housing and Support for Poor Families

In certain places, the Province undertakes housing projects for the poorest of the poor, helping families without a safe or decent home obtain dignified housing — restoring not only physical security but also a sense of dignity and hope.

A Ministry of Human Dignity and Hope

These initiatives are not mere acts of charity, but part of the Province's broader commitment to integral human development. Wherever possible, the friars accompany people through their struggles, helping them build a better future for themselves and their families. Altogether, the Province's social ministry spans food distribution, healthcare assistance, education, hostel facilities, tuition programmes, scholarships, youth development, summer camps, housing assistance, and other emergency and humanitarian support, responding to the needs of local communities as they arise.
